Katie Chorlton - President
I have two sons at Big Park - Kai is in 4th grade and Gus is in 3rd. I love fun, community and giving back, so I joined Big Park PTSA when Kai started kindergarten. It feels good to support Big Park Community School - and to be part of something that makes our school feel even more special.
I am a massage therapist and have been practicing therapeutic massage and bodywork for 16 years. I have almost always worked for myself: I had a private practice in Crested Butte, Colorado for ten years and have had one here in the Village for the past four.
When I'm not in my studio, or working with Big Park PTSA, you can usually find me doing something outside. I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska (with five older brothers) and love anything outdoors and grubby. I enjoy most anything active, but have a special love for mountain biking and snowboarding.
We love Big Park School and feel both proud and grateful to be part of this community. I hope you'll join PTSA - and join us in making our school even more amazing.
Karen Muschkat - Vice President
I grew up in the Chicago area and ventured to Providence, Rhode Island, to attend Johnson & Wales College. I returned to Chicago and raised my first 2 children, Heather and Kyle, in the Illinois public school system. We decided to raise child number 3, Lilah, in Sedona, specifically the Village of Oak Creek, to get out of the big city and into the small town life.
After purchasing a house in the Village over 6 years ago, we officially moved to Sedona full time 2 years ago when Lilah entered kindergarten. I have worked for the past 20 years in the legal industry and continue to work as a paralegal/legal assistant for one of the most prestigious special needs attorneys in the country. I have worked with Rubin Law for over 10 years now, for the first 8 years in the office and now remotely from home.
I have always been involved in my children's schools, first as room mom, always a volunteer, and now finally as Vice President of the Big Park PTSA. We love Big Park and look forward to a wonderful future for all our students as we evolve and grow in the coming years.
Heidi Kenney - Secretary
After growing up in Flagstaff, AZ I transplanted to the South for 18 years. 17 of those were in Atlanta, GA where I met my husband. We have 2 girls. Kaya is in 5th grade and Luna is in 4th. We moved to AZ from Atlanta in the Fall of 2011 and ended up in Sedona in June of 2012. The Village of Oak Creek has become home for us and we love the small community and ease of living here. Our quality of life has sky rocketed compared to city living. It’s a beautiful thing to live in a place we can call a “living vacation”. We love the creek and hiking. Twice now we have climbed to the top of Bell Rock as a family. We didn’t know what we were missing until we left the big city.
I have been a licensed Esthetician since early 2004. I have worked in various Full service Salons, Spas, and Resorts and have owned my own businesses in Atlanta and most recently here in the Village of Oak Creek. It’s exciting to be working in my own studio doing what I’m passionate about. Skin care is not only my job, but my hobby. I’m lucky to have a job I absolutely love.
Big Park Community School has been great for my kids. I love the environment and the willingness from so many parents to be involved. Being on campus and seeing parents around at all times of the day is such a special thing. I’m so excited to be able to get more involved and be a part of the PTSA as Secretary. Last year was an emotional one for all with the uncertainty of Big Park’s continuance. I’m excited to be a part of the changes and thrilled this school is still here for our community.
I hope to see the PTSA grow and see what we as a community can do for our kids!
Caroline Oreel - Treasurer
I am a transplant from Madison, Wisconsin. A small community in the midwest hosting the 3rd largest university in the US. Needless to say, academics were a huge part of daily life. It is nice to find such a close community here at Big Park that is focused on our children. I am glad to have my daughter in school here now, with her little brother starting in 2017.
I am a graphic designer and a veterinarian, and in 2003 I bought a local vet clinic and moved to Sedona to be closer to family. Northern Arizona is such a great place to be, with the arts and culture, and year-round outdoor activities. In my free time I try to enjoy as much of it as possible, especially with the kids.
I became PTSA Treasurer to be get involved in my children’s school. It has been truly amazing to see in just this last year how much the parents, staff and community have pulled together and fought to keep the vision of Big Park School here for the children. As this focus continues I look forward to being a part of this AMAZING community.
